Chapter 17
Basil Waite's apartment was a grungy, dark hole littered with pizza boxes, dirty clothes, and empty beer bottles. Ancient tables in the living room housed peculiar collections of things like lava lamps and water bongs, and the walls were decorated with flags depicting rock groups and a giant poster of Jimi Hendrix-- Noel's idol. We'd agreed to meet here as I was too embarrassed to be seen in public with my black eye, and I now found myself regretting the decision.
"How the hell can you live this way?" I bitched, accepting the beer Basil offered.
"What can I say? We need a woman around here. What's in the bag?" His hand indicated the plastic bag I was holding and I grinned. It was a gift I'd picked up to thank him for the picnic.
"It's for you," I said.
"No shit?" Basil peered into the bag and smiled. "You bought me a leather jacket?"
"To replace the one I gave to the Salvation Army. It's also my way of saying thank you."
"For what?"
"The picnic. Duh!"
Basil laughed. "I'll wear it on the tour."
"What tour?"
"That's my good news." He handed me a CD with a giant marijuana leaf on the cover and the words, Dimestore Ganja, emblazoned across the top. "The label wants us to go out on the road to promote the CD while the first single gets released."
"It's gonna be on the radio?" I squealed excitedly.
"Yep. In a couple of weeks. We leave for the tour next Thursday."
"How long?" I found myself a little saddened to hear of him leaving. After three years of fighting and fucking, Basil and I had finally developed a friendship and it would be strange now to let it go.
"Three months. If the song hits it could be longer." He nodded at the disc in my hand. "That CD is yours."
"Thank you." Something frightening occurred to me and I frowned suddenly. "There aren't any, ‘Meagan's a bitch’ songs on here are there? I think I've had my fill of slander for awhile."
"Naw," Basil chuckled. "I'd never do that. Sorry about Amber, that was a really low blow."
"Yeah."
"Fuck, Meagan." His eyes studied my face. "I wish you could come with me."
"What?"
Smiling, he cocked his head. "You don't know, do you? I was an asshole and I really screwed things up between us but --shit, Meagan-- I never really got over you. You took care of me for three years when I was nothing but a bum playing one-night-a-week gigs in local bars. I wasn't good at showing it, and maybe I can only say this now because I'm leaving, but I really did love you. You're the one that got away."
"Basil, you're stoned," I said, trying to lighten the mood even though his words touched my heart.
"Not stoned, baby, just honest."
"I know, Baz. There's a part of me that will always love you too." I grinned. "You gave me my first Twinkie."
"Yeah," he agreed, laughing. "We always cling to our firsts."
An image of Amber popped into my head. "Some firsts are better off forgotten," I whispered.
